"Jeune femme a la fontaine," by Jean Baptiste Camille Corot is expected to be sold at Sotheby's for an estimated $1.8 million on 2nd July 2010. The 19th century master piece painting has a long and interesting history and were once owned by Hamburg banker Eduard Ludwig Behrens and a patron of Claude Monet. At one point the painting was in the custody of NAZIs as they had stolen this from the Behrens.
The painting was later returned to the heirs of Goerg Behrens. Goerg Behrens was arrested in the NAZI rule and sent to the concentration camp in 1938. The heirs however prefer to remain anonymous. Behrens had the most valuable art collection during this period in Europe. "Jeune femme a la fontaine" remained hung for over 66 years at Kroller-Muller Museum in Otterlo, Netherlands.
